ZHONG XINXUAN

Shih Chien University

I am Zhong Xinxuan, a designer dedicated to bag design and material transformation. I believe that objects are not merely functional carriers, but fragments of emotion and memory. At the core of my practice lies “extraction” and “reconstruction”—uncovering forgotten narratives within existing objects, and through structural deconstruction and recomposition, giving materials new forms of life and contexts of use, allowing everyday objects to be reborn through transformation.

Do you remember me

Do You Remember Me This work centers on Alzheimer’s disease, exploring the impact of memory loss on both individual identity and interpersonal relationships. “Do You Remember Me” is not only a question, but also an emotional dialogue between patients and their loved ones, suspended between remembering and being forgotten. In this design, the bag is conceived as a container of memory. By combining the form of a bag with an apron, it is transformed into a wearable leather structure that stays close to the body, symbolizing the attachment between memory and everyday life. In terms of material, the work adopts an upcycling approach by reusing a leather suit vest left behind by an elder. Through deconstruction and reconstruction, the material is brought back into a contemporary context. From a sustainability perspective, the design is guided by upcycling and zero-waste principles. The vortex structure is partially constructed from leftover leather offcuts generated during the cutting process. These discarded fragments are reassembled and layered into the main structure, reducing waste while reflecting the fragmented and fading nature of memory. The formal language is centered on the concept of a “vortex.” Through rotation and layering, it expresses how memory is gradually drawn in and dissipated over time. The bag is no longer a handheld object, but a form that envelops the body, representing the inseparable connection between memory and the self. The work is inspired by the Taiwanese drama Forget Me Not and personal family experiences. It reflects a dislocation of time and a reversal of roles, where past and present, remembering and forgetting, coexist within one person—making the question “Who am I?” continuously rewritten. Through material regeneration and structural transformation, this work translates memory into a wearable spatial form, allowing it to persist and evolve ove time.
