As an artist trained in equestrianism, I have noticed that the rider–horse relationship is often misinterpreted by the public as one of domination and exploitation. In practice, however, riding is a mutual, co-creative interaction: while the rider appears to hold power, they are themselves constrained—“domesticated,” in a sense—by institutional rules and conventional tack. To visualize true human–equine equality, I am redesigning three key pieces of tack: the bridle, the saddle, and the stirrup. Take the snaffle bit as an example. Traditionally, one end sits in the horse’s mouth while the reins held in the rider’s hands transmit one-way commands. In my version, the rein end is relocated to the rider’s own face and mouth. Both horse and rider must now generate oral movements to influence each other, turning the flow of signals into a two-way exchange. This physiological reciprocity embodies a new riding paradigm in which rider and horse tame—and are tamed by—each other as equals. 作為一名受過馬術訓練的藝術創作者,我注意到大眾常將「騎手—馬匹」關係簡化為控制/被控制或剝削/被剝削。但在實際騎乘中,雙方是一種相互影響、共同成就的動態;甚至處於「支配者」位置的騎手,也同樣受制於競賽規則與馬具體系,可被視為另一種「被制度馴化」的動物主體。 為了直觀呈現「真正的人馬平等」,我決定重新設計三件核心馬具:水勒、馬鞍、馬鐙。 以水勒為例:傳統結構中,一端銜接馬的口腔與面部,另一端纏繞在騎手手中的韁繩,訊號單向傳遞。我的改造方案是將韁端移至騎手的面部與口腔。如此一來,人與馬都需要在口腔中產生動作以影響對方,訊息流變成雙向——騎手與馬匹在生理層面互相馴化,象徵平等且互惠的全新騎乘關係。
