Tribe Collection

I am a Kenyan designer driven by a passion for sustainability, innovation, and redefining what luxury means in today's world. I believe luxury is not about price or exclusivity—it is about craftsmanship, thoughtful design, meaningful experiences, and the stories that products carry. My goal is to create pieces that are both aspirational and accessible while maintaining a strong commitment to environmental responsibility. My professional background spans luxury hospitality, fashion, events, and creative industries, experiences that have shaped my understanding of how people connect with brands, products, and experiences. Working within Kenya's leading luxury hospitality sector has taught me the value of detail, quality, and customer-centric design, principles that I bring into every creative project. I am particularly passionate about the circular economy and building greener value chains within fashion and design. I believe the future belongs to designers who can create beauty while minimizing waste, extending product lifecycles, and embracing sustainable materials and production methods. As a multidisciplinary creative, I constantly explore new mediums of expression and seek opportunities to integrate technology into design. Whether through fashion, accessories, digital tools, or emerging innovations, I am motivated by the challenge of pushing boundaries and finding new ways to solve problems creatively. This bag represents my vision of the future: a fusion of sustainability, functionality, innovation, and modern luxury. It reflects my belief that great design should not only look beautiful but also contribute positively to people, communities, and the planet.

Gunia Bag

Category: Accessories

Competitions: Africa

A “gunia” can symbolize sustainability really powerfully in fashion because it already carries associations of reuse, agriculture, trade, labor, and everyday Kenyan life. Turning it into a 50% handbag for a runway piece creates a contrast between something traditionally functional and something elevated and luxurious — which is exactly what sustainable fashion often tries to do. Here’s how it can symbolize sustainability: • Upcycling & circular fashion Using actual gunia material or inspired textures shows that materials seen as “ordinary” or disposable can be transformed into high-fashion pieces instead of becoming waste. • Connection to local economies Gunias are deeply tied to farming, markets, and transport in Kenya. Incorporating them honors local supply chains and craftsmanship rather than relying only on imported luxury aesthetics. • Durability over fast fashion Gunias are made to survive heavy use. That resilience can symbolize long-lasting fashion instead of disposable trends. • Raw vs refined contrast Pairing rough gunia texture with structured tailoring, leather, beadwork, embroidery, or metallic hardware visually tells a story of transformation and conscious design. Why gunia specifically works: • It is immediately recognizable culturally. • It carries memory and identity — markets, harvests, movement, trade. • It represents utility and resourcefulness. • It challenges ideas of what luxury “should” look like. • It creates a distinctly African sustainability narrative instead of copying Western eco-fashion references. For a runway handbag concept, you could: • Use 50% reclaimed gunia fabric and 50% refined material (leather, vegan leather, denim, kitenge, or metallic fabric). • Keep visible stitching or original grain markings to preserve authenticity. • Add embroidery that tells a story — possibly tying into your Kesorah concept of journey and exploration. • Create exaggerated silhouettes inspired by the shape of a filled grain sack but structured into a luxury form. A strong runway concept statement could be: “The gunia represents survival, movement, and reinvention — transforming a vessel of labor into a vessel of expression.” Or shorter: “From harvest to haute couture.”
