SIO HA KUAN

Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology

Hello, my name is KUAN SIO HA, and I’m majoring in Footwear Design. I have a strong passion for combining craftsmanship with conceptual storytelling, and my graduation project focused on emotional healing through footwear design. I'm particularly interested in experimental forms, material exploration, and the cultural meanings embedded in shoes. I’m now looking for opportunities to grow within a creative and dynamic environment where I can continue learning and contribute through thoughtful design.

Echoes Under the Surface

Category: Footwear

Competitions: China Mainland

This design is based on the classic brogue derby shoe and explores the theme of "absence"—a reflection of the physical or emotional incompleteness experienced in one’s life journey. The shoe features naturally blemished vegetable-tanned leather, symbolizing the indelible marks left by time and experience. By integrating tattoo techniques with leather craftsmanship, the design visualizes and symbolizes personal trauma. The eyelet structure, a defining feature of traditional derby shoes, is reinterpreted here: on the left shoe, the eyestay is rendered solely as a tattooed graphic on the leather surface, preserving its visual presence while stripping away its functionality—an allegory for loss and the remnants of memory. On the right shoe, a juxtaposition of a real leather eyestay and a tattooed outline conveys a dialogue between structural dissonance and psychological restoration. The sole is composed of contrasting materials: the outer half retains the traditional leather, while the inner half is constructed with 3D-printed transparent resin, representing unstable support and post-traumatic regeneration. Through material texture, structural absence, and visual symbolism, this design constructs a narrative space about pain and response, conveying the inner strength that enables one to move forward—despite the scars.
