MENG-HUAN CHOU

Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology

my name is Zhou Meng-Huan, and I’m currently a junior majoring in Product Design. I’ve always been fascinated by the characteristics of different materials—especially leather, which combines warmth, texture, and versatility. That’s why I decided to take on the challenge of this Leather Creative Design Competition. I love trying new things, whether it’s experimenting with unfamiliar design styles, production techniques, or mixing different materials. I find these exploratory processes to be both exciting and valuable learning experiences. To me, design is a continuous journey of experimentation and growth. Being open to trial and error is what often leads to unexpected creativity. Through this competition, I hope to express my ideas and passion for leather design through hands-on work. I’m also looking forward to exchanging insights with other participants, gaining inspiration, and deepening my own design thinking along the way.

Negative Eye

Category: Accessories

Competitions: Taiwan Region

I attempted to explore a central question through this design concept: When we are forced to confront the darkest corners of our emotions, do we choose to suppress them, run from them, or coexist with them? In terms of form, I integrated anatomical structures with the imagery of mimetic tentacles, transforming the eye from a passive organ into something that feels sentient—entwining and interfering with its host. This symbolizes the backlash of emotions on both the body and behavior. For material choices, I used synthetic fur, PVC foam, and vegetable-tanned leather to create a sensation that feels organic yet unnatural, enhancing the eerie and unsettling atmosphere. This work is not only an experiment in form and character design, but also a visual parable on a psychological level: “The eye is not an invader—it is a part of us we’re finally forced to see.”
