PACENCIA: A Tribute to Memories

Category: Footwear

Competitions: Philippines

The concept of this is all about reminiscing memories. My footwear design is inspired by the tumba-tumba or rocking chairs in the Philippines which includes solihiya weaving patterns in its designs and the national footwear of the Philippines which is called “Bakya,” slip-on wooden sandals. It is a 3 inch bootie with solihiya weaving patterns made from leather cords. It also features Sampaguita flower, the national flower of the Philippines, tooled in the leather strap. Its wooden heels are intricately carved with the help of artisans and their craftsmanship. There is a zipper closure at the back of the booties for easy fitting. This is my take on fusing the iconic bakya and the concept of the rocking chair where most of us made our memories with our grandparents. Growing up, we would always visit our ancestral house and see my grandma sitting in her rocking chair. We would always chat with each other during siesta time and play Bingo. My cousins and I would even sneak in to play with her rocking chair while she is not around. Those simple moments really made my childhood memorable. Even though my grandma passed away last 2017, she left an indelible mark on me. That's why I designed this as a tribute to our memories.
