TURN OVER

Category: Apparel

Competitions: International, Philippines

Turn Over by Andrei Valera sparked from the idea that humans are bound to time because they live in it. A coat dress design represents the grasp of time, incorporating elements such as the contrast of light and dark to symbolize how time is measured through day and night. The use of genuine leather, known for its longevity, is combined with the local woven textile to create manipulation techniques of twists resembling the turning over of an hourglass. This design champions a modern version of the Philippine National Dress using offcuts of cattle hide leather and Inabel Binakol, a woven textile from Ilocos Sur, Philippines. The goal is to curate a coat dress that serves as a fashion time capsule, lasting a lifetime and will be cherished by its potential wearers. Turn Over is original and innovative in several ways. Firstly, it takes a traditional garment, the Philippine National Dress, and gives it a modern twist through materialization and techniques. Secondly, it combines different materials, such as leather and local woven textile, in a unique way to create a visually striking design. Lastly, the emphasis on sustainability and designing for longevity sets the project apart by prioritizing the creation of garments that are not only beautiful but also durable and timeless. An intricately designed coat dress will not only last but also be cherished for a lifetime. Turn Over is a timeless piece that can be passed down through generations. The emphasis on sustainability also contributes to its lasting appeal championing slow fashion, as it aligns with the growing awareness and appreciation for environmentally conscious fashion choices which is instilled in the core of the competition. 2 minute video: https://youtu.be/Xf6RqyY8uOY
