Mimi Xing

The Royal College of Art

Mimi Xing is a textile designer currently studying MA Textiles at the Royal College of Art, London, after completing her undergraduate degree in Textile Design at Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology. Her practice centres on material, structure and visual storytelling, with a particular focus on modular design as both a visual language and a structural approach. Through material experimentation and structural research, she explores how individual components can be repeated, detached, replaced and recombined to create objects and compositions that are adaptable, evolving and visually expressive. Working with PVC, leather and mixed media, Mimi investigates the relationship between material qualities, construction methods and visual impact. Alongside her visual and material exploration, part of her current research considers how modular systems can encourage user participation and extend the lifespan of objects through adaptation and reconfiguration.

Here,There

Category: Accessories

Competitions: International

"Here, There" begins with patterns encountered by chance in everyday surroundings. Repeated shapes found on architectural surfaces, fences, windows and arranged objects were collected and translated into modular forms. Through laser cutting, colour treatment and layered connections, these visual fragments move from flat observation into wearable structures around the body. The project explores how overlooked rhythms in ordinary environments can be extracted, reorganised and transformed into a new material language.
