Kenneth Candia Aria

Michael Angelo School of Creative arts

I am Kenneth Candia Aria,a leather artisan based in Kampala, Uganda.I would say I am a self taught leather artisan because I have not had any formal training in leather crafting apart from watching YouTube tutorials and reading about it. Although I do have a background in art and design from Micheal Angelo School of Creative arts in Entebbe Uganda where I did a short course in art and design majoring in painting and sculpting. I have always liked well made thoughtfully put together leather items like shoes, jackets and other accessories etc but it never occurred to me that I could make these things for myself. It's only when I was working in the art department for a film project when I got exposed to leather working when I was asked to make a costume with leather parts for the film. From that moment I was hooked.I started researching more about leather and making all kinds of things for myself, initially to entertain myself and then other people started asking me to make all kinds of leather items for them too. And the interest peaked from there with the realization that leather was a versatile medium through which I could express myself artistically and creatively with a strong element of functionality and originality. Since then I have been at it, always trying to improve my skills and expertise in leather crafting.

Spiral waves.

My design concept is based on the idea of spirals.Spirals usually start from a central point and spread out wards creating waves as it moves along. So for this project,I decided to use veg-tan leather and bark-cloth.In Uganda, the 'Mutuba' tree (Ficus) has been used for a long time.Different tribes and culture's here use it for different things. But it's among the Baganda people that it has always been used for making clothes and so forth. It has always been harvested in a sustainable way to make sure that the tree does not wither out to ensure a sustained supply over time. The reason I chose to use it along side veg-tan leather is that, though it has been around all this time, very few artisans use it in combination with leather to make things and yet it's a beautiful material that comes in three colors mostly brown, black and white and there is a possibility to change the color as well. I do think that combining it with leather in a modern design concept gives it another lease of life since it's a sustainable and bio-degradable material that should be put to good use and also appreciating the fact that our fore fathers used them in a sustainable way in their day to day welfare.
