Kanthe Leather

My name is Munyiva Musuva, Founder and Creative Director of Kanthe Leather, a Kenyan luxury leather brand rooted in sustainability, craftsmanship, and human resilience. Design has been part of my story from a very young age. After high school, I began pursuing fashion and tailoring, but life had its own plot twist, I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder before completing my course. After two months in a psychiatric ward and several serious conversations with my psychiatrist, I was strongly advised to choose a “more stable” career path. Apparently, creativity and bipolar disorder sounded like a dangerous duet. So I pivoted and pursued a Bachelor of Commerce degree majoring in Marketing at the University of Nairobi. Yet even while working in corporate spaces, creativity kept tapping me on the shoulder like an unpaid intern demanding attention. Everything changed when I joined Leather Industries of Kenya, one of the major tanneries in Kenya then, to lead the Sales and Marketing team. Surrounded by leather, artisans, and manufacturing, I fell in love with the material and the possibilities within it. After the pandemic, Kanthe Leather was born. At Kanthe Leather, we transform imperfect and discarded Maasai cow leather marked by marks, scratches, scars, and natural imperfections into bold luxury pieces using embossed textures. We also use recycled brass accessories and handcrafted bead artistry to elevate our pieces. We collaborate with women and youth groups to create dignified and sustainable livelihoods. Our pieces are truly beautiful and serve as a heritage of Africa. Beyond creating bags, I am building a community centered brand that advocates for mental health awareness and social sustainability. My journey has taught me that imperfections are not flaws to hide, but stories worth carrying with pride.

KINTSUGI MAMBA BAG

Category: Accessories

Competitions: Africa

Kintsugi Mamba Bag by Kanthe Leather The Kintsugi Mamba Bag by Kanthe Leather is a luxury leather bag concept inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Kintsugi, the art of repairing broken pottery with gold and transforming fractures into beauty. The project uses beaded repair lines across printed leather surfaces to symbolize healing, resilience, and transformation after emotional struggle. Inspired by my personal journey as a bipolar survivor now 14 years past diagnosis, the design challenges the idea that people struggling with mental health are broken. Instead, it celebrates survival, growth, and strength through adversity. The bag showcases African leather craftsmanship, luxury bead artistry, and the art of storytelling to create something beautiful from leather that would otherwise have been discarded. It is designed to express creativity while promoting emotional healing and resilience through fashion. This bag is created using leather from Maasai cows reared by nomadic herders through rough terrain. These hides naturally carry marks, scratches, and chickenpox scars. Through sustainable craftsmanship and the application of the crocodile-inspired “Mamba” print, the hides are elevated into luxurious leather pieces. The Kintsugi Mamba Bag also incorporates recycled brass accessories as part of its sustainability approach. The brass used for the logo plates, zipper finishes, handle fittings, and feet studs is sourced from reclaimed brass, which is melted down and reused, reducing metal waste and energy consumption while promoting sustainability. The project’s sustainability extends beyond environmental responsibility into social sustainability by advocating for mental health awareness and conversations around dignity, inclusion, and emotional wellbeing within our communities. By linking fashion with human experience, the project demonstrates that sustainability is not only about preserving materials, but also preserving people, stories, and communities. The Kintsugi Mamba Bag is more than a bag; it is a movement. It connects fashion with emotional healing and aims to empower individuals living with bipolar disorder and other mental health challenges by turning creativity into purpose, healing, and opportunity.
