WEI LE WU

Shih Chien University

My name is Wei-Le Wu, a senior student majoring in Fashion Design at Shih Chien University in Taiwan. Throughout my academic journey, I have developed a deep-rooted passion for craftsmanship and an unwavering dedication to the art of garment making. I describe myself as a pragmatic visionary—someone who respects the technical rigor of construction while tirelessly pursuing the emotional resonance that design can evoke. To me, the value of design extends far beyond aesthetics or fleeting trends. I believe that design serves as a vessel for our perceptions of the world. It is a medium through which we translate intangible feelings into tangible forms, creating a bridge between the creator and the wearer. My philosophy centers on "Empathetic Beauty"—the idea that a well-crafted piece should not only be visually striking but also strike a chord within the soul, allowing people to find common ground through shared sensory experiences. Being immersed in the rigorous environment of Shih Chien University has sharpened my practical skills and my ability to solve complex structural problems. Whether it is the meticulous manipulation of fabric or the intricate details of hand-stitching, I find immense joy in the process of creation. I am constantly exploring how traditional craftsmanship can be reimagined in a contemporary context to better express our inner worlds. Looking forward, I aspire to continue creating works that are both grounded in reality and elevated by emotion. My goal is to design not just clothes, but stories that resonate, fostering a sense of connection and understanding in this ever-changing world. I am eager to bring my pragmatic work ethic and my heartfelt passion for design to new challenges and collaborations.

Metamorphic Truth

Category: Accessories

Competitions: Taiwan Region

In a contemporary society obsessed with flawless surfaces, we often lose sight of the profound beauty found within struggle and growth. My design, titled "Metamorphic Truth," challenges the conventional cult of perfection by embracing the raw, imperfect vestiges of transformation. Drawing inspiration from the biological process of a cicada shedding its shell, this artisanal bag utilizes the metaphor of "Molting" to represent the courage required to reveal one's true self. The exterior is engineered from fragmented, ivory vegetable-tanned cowhide, meticulously layered to mimic the brittle, peeling texture of a discarded husk. These fragments represent the shedding of societal expectations and the protective layers we build around ourselves. Beneath this structured shell lies a vulnerable yet resilient core, crafted from soft, nude-toned cowhide that mimics the tenderness of newborn skin. To bridge these two contrasting states, I have employed intentional, raw mending techniques using coarse hemp rope. Each artisanal stitch serves as a visible scar of growth, proving that the soul is only truly revealed when the outer shell is broken. This process of "stitching back together" symbolizes the reconstruction of the spirit—not into a perfect, untouched form, but into a more profound wholeness tempered by experience. Through this piece, I celebrate beauty found in the fragments and the strength inherent in the act of being reconstructed. It is a tribute to those who dare to peel back the facade and embrace the authenticity of their own evolution.
