The Emancipation of the Manananggal

Category: Apparel

Competitions: International

Feared and misunderstood, the Manananggal is a mythical creature from Filipino folklore known for its ability to sever its upper body from its lower half and grow wings to take flight at night. Often portrayed as a symbol of monstrosity or darkness, the Manananggal also embodies themes of duality, transformation, and power. This ensemble reclaims and reimagines that narrative—not as a figure of fear, but as a metaphor for emancipation, self-reclamation, and breaking free from societal constraints. This Manananggal-inspired ensemble is a striking two-part look: the outer jacket and its powerful inner fit. The jacket commands attention with its bold, sculptural silhouette—sharp edges and exaggerated forms that echo the wings of the mythical creature. Crafted with raw attitude, it exudes a rebellious, punk energy, intensified by the use of safety pins, eyelets, and zippers as aggressive yet purposeful embellishments. Beneath the jacket lies a deceptively simple yet captivating inner piece. Its clean lines and intentional patterns carve a silhouette that radiates strength, poise, and self-assurance. The contrast between the structured chaos of the outer layer and the sleek confidence of the inner form creates a compelling visual narrative—a fearless reimagining of folklore through fashion. As a subtle nod to sustainability, the piece incorporates repurposed metal elements—including eyelets, safety pins, and zippers—breathing new life into discarded hardware. This conscious choice reflects not only the resourcefulness rooted in punk culture, but also a small yet deliberate step toward more mindful fashion practices.
