Omer Kedem

Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem

My name is Kedem Omer, and art has always helped me express myself. When words failed me, I have my hands translate through craft/fashion/illustrations etc. Creating is how I keep from overflowing, I hope my work offers others a refreshing drink. Since childhood I've drawn and crafted, found my love for leather and shoe making (traditional and modern) through my professional degree in Fashion, jewelry and craft. I'll be working hard to continue that journey with the goal of bringing forth subjects that need to be heard by a people who are not heard enough, or simply my take and thoughts I want to share with the world on different subjects.

“Vagina Dentata”

Category: Footwear

Competitions: International

This “huntress pouch” is meant to emphasize the double standard of man and woman genitalia. The project represents the vagina as a carnivore plant in a fantastic alienlike look. Japanese artist Megumi Igarashi who scanned her vagina, turned it into a Cano and was judged and punished by the court for indecency -In contrast, the Kanamara festival in Japan has been celebrating and glorifying the penis. Megumis story is just one example of many cases throughout the world of the inequality shown throughout history between the female and male sex, and sparked the thought process of this project. The process of making “Vagina Dentata” involved mixed techniques of traditional shoe and jewelry making combined- lamination, wet molding, tooling, forging, Soldering, metalwork etc.

"The Red Woman"

Category: Footwear

Competitions: International

The Red Woman is a project inspired by the recurring cultural motif of red shoes and the "red look" in pop culture—particularly in its association with women. Since the beginning of time, humans have been influenced by color theory, with different cultures assigning various meanings to colors. As technology advanced, cinema developed iconic visual styles, often returning to the use of red as a bold aesthetic choice. The woman in red is a visual theme that has appeared in many forms throughout the years, often carrying diverse connotations and symbolism. Inspired by this legacy, I chose a specific pose and design to bring my own interpretation to life, creating her based on my personal ideals, bringing out the powerful image of the woman in red in a playful and teasing design of shoes. The shoe was traditionally handmade, combined with 3D sculpting techniques for the heels, which are reinforced with copper to support the weight of a person.
