Cẩm Tiên Phan Thị

Ton Duc Thang University

My name is Phan Thi Cam Tien. I am currently studying Fashion Design. To me, fashion is not only about creating beautiful products, but also a way to tell stories and preserve emotions through images. I am particularly passionate about fashion illustration, where I can freely express my ideas and personal perspective, with the desire to create meaningful and unique designs from those lines. I was born and raised in the southern region of Vietnam, where there are vast fields and winding rivers. It is a place with poetic scenery, peaceful surroundings, and simple, sincere people. These seemingly ordinary things carry a deep beauty that easily touches emotions. I always wonder, if these beauties could be captured and preserved through drawings and designs, and then shared with others, how meaningful it would be. With leather as a material, a durable material that carries the marks of time. I believe it is a suitable medium to convey stories about memories, my homeland, and its people. By participating in this leather design competition, I hope to bring those simple images into my designs, not only to create aesthetically pleasing products but also artistic works with emotion and depth. Through this, I hope to introduce the simple beauty of my homeland to others and create a connection between the viewers and the stories behind each design. At the same time, I aim to use leather in a responsible way by creating long-lasting designs that reduce waste and honor the value of the material.

Inspired by the traditional Vietnamese fishing lift net from the Mekong Delta, Cất Vó is a contemporary fashion accessory that beautifully preserves and shares the country's rich cultural heritage. The overall silhouette of the handbag interprets the net's wide, funnel-shaped form into its body, while two curved, hand-bent natural bamboo handles mimic the net's stretched frame. These functional handles can fold flat or rotate 90 degrees via a detachable metal ring system to closely resemble a real lift net. Handcrafted from premium Italian vegetable-tanned leather, the bag's body features hand-carved fish motifs and hand-dyed color gradients that replicate the three-dimensional texture of rippling water. The opening utilizes a unique leather-cutting technique to create wave-shaped flaps around a fish-shaped charm, making the fish appear to leap out of the water whenever the bag is opened. Inside, the spacious interior easily accommodates everyday essentials like a phone, wallet, and cosmetics, and is completed with natural leather business card holders decorated with matching hand-dyed fish motifs. Beyond its practical use, every element of Cất Vó—from its meticulous craftsmanship and organic materials to its unified storytelling of Vietnam's river culture—balances functionality with cultural identity, offering a meaningful, timeless expression where traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design harmoniously come together.

Cat Vo-a handheld bag inspired by the traditional fishing net (vó) - is a refined transformation of a familiar fishing method from Vietnam's riverine agions, especially the Southwest. More than just a tool for livelihood, the Vo embodies a peaceful rhythm of life and a labor culture deeply connected to nature, where people and water exist in harmony. From that rustic beauty, the "Cat Vo" handbag was created with the intention of bringing everyday life into fashion not only to honor simple yet profound values, but also to preserve and retell the cultural story of the homeland through a modern and highly functional form. The traditional vó, with its structure of netting and sturdy bamboo rods, shaped like an expanded funnel, became the primary inspiration for the bag's silhouette. The design draws on this distinctive geometric structure, transforming the tensioned frame into curved bamboo handles, combined with a body shaped like a funnel in the "lowering the net" state when the Vo opens wide as if embracing the flow of water and schools of fish. The two bamboo handles are arranged in parallel, allowing them to be folded compactly during movement or rotated at a 90-degree angle for display, vividly recreating the image of the vó in real life. The body of the bag is a fusion of material manipulation techniques and refined craftsmanship. The base leather is surface-treated to create a rippling effect with subtly emerging fish motifs, evoking the movement of water. Enveloping the exterior is a handwoven leather mesh, recreating the image of the vó cradling a school of fish within, resulting in a layered transparency rich in depth and a vivid sense of motion. A distinctive highlight of the design lies in the 3D fish charm detail. Entirely handcrafted with a clearly defined three-dimensional structure, this element is attached to the zipper as a "living motion." As the bag is opened, the fish sways fluidly with each pull, evoking the sensation of swimming along the current or suddenly leaping above the surface. The interplay between physical movement and the treated material surface creates a vivid visual experience, allowing the design to go beyond form and embody a narrative quality. More than just a fashion item, "Cat Vo" serves as a vessel of layered cultural memories, reflecting the rustic beauty and emotional depth of the Vietnamese spirit. Crafted from durable leather, the design not only meets the practical demands of modern life but also functions as an accessory rich in aesthetic value and cultural identity. It is where beauty, functionality, and national spirit converge, quietly yet powerfully contributing to the dissemination of Vietnamese culture.
