Shackles Born Unity is a leather garment inspired by Africa's journey from ancient civilization through periods of oppression toward unity, resilience, and rebirth. The design explores how shared struggles can transform into collective strength and identity. The colorful woven-inspired ጥለት detail at the back symbolizes Africa's rich civilizations, cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and innovation, reminding viewers that African history began long before oppression. The structured upper section incorporates a leather collar, lock, chain, and restraint-inspired elements representing restriction, division, and silenced voices throughout history. At the waist, an Africa-shaped brass connector symbolizes unity and the power created when diverse people come together. The lower section transitions into layered golden leather panels that represent growth, movement, hope, and the rise of Pan-Africanism. The layered construction reflects progress while maintaining visual harmony with the upper structure. Genuine leather was selected as the primary material because it embodies endurance, durability, strength, and longevity.
