Nopanun Phosri

Chulalongkorn University

Born in 1996, Nopanun Phosri grew up in a coastal city in Thailand, surrounded by a slower rhythm of life and the natural textures of seaside landscapes. At the age of 16, he moved to Bangkok with his sister to attend his dream high school. The transition from a quiet coastal environment to the intensity of Thailand’s capital exposed him to an entirely new urban culture filled with movement, diversity, nightlife, and self-expression. Living in Bangkok became a turning point that shaped both his identity and creative perspective. During these formative years, Nopanun became increasingly expressive through fashion, using clothing as a medium to explore personality, confidence, and individuality. His fascination with style eventually led him to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design at Chulalongkorn University, where he developed a strong interest in conceptual design, material experimentation, and visual storytelling. Nopanun’s creative practice is driven by a love for playful, colorful, and imaginative design. He enjoys combining bold silhouettes, unexpected textures, and vibrant color palettes to create work that feels expressive, energetic, and emotionally engaging. Drawing inspiration from urban environments, pop culture, youth identity, and everyday observations, his designs often balance artistic experimentation with wearability. Through his work, Nopanun aims to create fashion that feels fun, confident, and creatively liberating while encouraging self-expression and individuality.

can "knot" believe

Category: Footwear

Competitions: Thailand

This project explores the idea of structural illusion through the visual language of knots, ropes, and twisted forms. Inspired by Surrealism, the work challenges the viewer’s understanding of function, balance, and materiality by transforming familiar knot structures into experimental fashion accessories and footwear concepts. The title “Can Knot Believe” is a wordplay combining “cannot believe” and “knot,” reflecting the project’s intention to create forms that appear impossible yet still functional. The design process began with observing knots in everyday objects and artistic references. Knots usually symbolize tension, connection, complexity, and restriction, but in this project they are reinterpreted as playful sculptural structures. By enlarging, twisting, and abstracting these forms, the designer creates silhouettes that blur the line between object, sculpture, and wearable fashion. The target audience consists of fashion-conscious individuals aged 20–29 who enjoy statement pieces and experimental design. These consumers value individuality, creativity, and fashion as a form of self-expression rather than purely functionality. Therefore, the project focuses strongly on artistic impact and emotional response. The bold shapes, vibrant colors, and exaggerated curves are designed to create curiosity and surprise while still maintaining a sense of elegance and movement. Leather is used as the main material in the footwear design because of its flexibility, durability, and ability to naturally adapt to complex forms. The project experiments with manipulating leather into curved and twisted silhouettes inspired by knots, allowing the shoes to appear sculptural while still remaining wearable. By folding, layering, and shaping the leather, the design creates a sense of movement and fluidity that reflects the surreal concept of the collection. The softness of the material also contrasts with the bold structural appearance, making the forms feel both organic and unexpected. 3D-printed details are incorporated into certain parts of the shoes to enhance the structural illusion and add a contemporary touch. These elements are used subtly as supportive or decorative components rather than the main structure, allowing the focus to remain on the craftsmanship and form of the leather itself. This combination of handcrafted techniques and modern processes helps create a balance between artistic experimentation and functional fashion design. Material selection also strengthens the surreal aesthetic of the project. Glossy finishes, smooth textures, and layered construction emphasize the futuristic and experimental mood. Techniques inspired by inflated forms and structural manipulation help the shoes appear soft and fluid despite their stable construction. Overall, this project successfully combines surrealist inspiration with contemporary fashion experimentation. It demonstrates how ordinary elements such as knots and ropes can be transformed into visually striking footwear and accessories through innovative leather construction and sculptural design. By questioning conventional structures and expectations, the work encourages viewers to rethink the relationship between functionality, illusion, materiality, and artistic expression in fashion design.
