Amanda Regina Orate

University of the East

Greetings. I'm Amanda Orate, a visual communication student in the Philippines at the University of the East. I am inspired by ideas that turn the ordinary into innovative, renewable, functional, and visually appealing solutions. What drives me are the creations of things that are yet to be imagined and made into existence. Thus, I think that design and creation are the most beautiful things, and through my work, I hope to honor these natural materials and craft striking pieces for you and many others to see.

A Ragged Memory: SOLOWING

Category: Accessories

Competitions: International

The SOLOWING, a Ragged Memory, sling bag design features layered wing panels, each cut as a singular gesture from the raw, irregular edges of cowhide. Inspired by winged creatures like dragons, bats, and the mythical Filipino creature, “manananggal” (a being that splits its body and flies into the night), the design also draws from the “basahan,” a Filipino rag crafted from gathered, stitched-together fabric scraps. The leather scraps with raw, uneven edges of cowhide celebrate irregularity and wildness, turning them into marks of beauty and memory that honor the animal’s life while promoting zero-waste. Meanwhile, the adjustable side knot completes the piece, inviting personal expression and movement with its wing-like form.
