Dressed for eternity

This project was developed as part of a third-year course in tailored menswear. The assignment challenged us to investigate a specific dress code and to reinterpret it through personal and conceptual research. This project explores Jewish burial shrouds. Through my research, I approached clothing as a reflection of an entire life, culminating in a single climactic moment. The moment of death. The project considers the garment as an object of memory and belonging, and examines what happens to us when we die. What happens to the body versus what happens to the soul. The outfit I created engages in a dialogue with traditional Jewish clothing, interpreted through a personal lens. I designed a jacket made from a textile I developed myself: laser-cut cowhide leather sliced into tiny squares, which are then patchworked into a single sheet. I hand-embroidered onto the surface. This textile innovation allows for maximum use of material, as every scrap of leather can be utilized. I also created a hat that incorporates the same unique textile. The jacket is lined with silk, and the rest of the outfit is made from cool wool and cotton.
