Genet Mekonnen Berhe

Skyline Leather Fashion Training Center

My name is Genet Mekonnen, and I am the co-founder and designer at SEGEN, a leather goods brand based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. I started my professional journey as a nurse, but over time, I was drawn to the creative business my sister began. Her passion and vision inspired me to explore a new path. I enrolled in a leather design school, where I discovered my own love for craftsmanship and design. Today, I serve as the managing director and lead designer at SEGEN. I take pride in creating functional, artistic leather pieces that reflect cultural richness and timeless beauty. Each piece I design is a reflection of purpose, identity, and Ethiopian craftsmanship and a celebration of the journey we share as sisters.

Layered Strength

Category: Accessories

Competitions: Africa

This design, titled “Layered Strength,” is inspired by the values of resilience, sustainability, and sisterhood. Created under the SEGEN brand — a collaboration between two sisters, the bag is crafted using a patchwork technique made entirely from leftover leather. Each piece of scrap leather is hand-selected, cut, and layered with intention, transforming what would otherwise be discarded into a functional work of art. The bold, geometric patchwork symbolizes the layered nature of life: the struggles, the lessons, and the beauty that emerges from piecing things together over time. Just like our personal story — growing up resourceful, never wasting anything, and always standing by each other — this design reflects our belief that nothing should be thrown away. With creativity, everything has value. SEGEN means blessing, and it’s also made from our names — SE for Senait and GEN for Genet. Originally launched as Bless Collection, the brand was rebranded as SEGEN to carry both our personal identity and the same spirit of gratitude and purpose. I, once a nurse, found my calling in design and now leads as SEGEN’s head designer — bringing care, precision, and artistry to every piece. At SEGEN, we believe that Variety is Beauty. That’s why no two bags are exactly alike — each one tells its own story. This project celebrates African craftsmanship, conscious design, and the power of turning small, imperfect pieces into something whole, strong, and beautiful — just like life itself.
