Trường Đại học Mỹ thuật Công nghiệp

I’m Lê Ngọc Minh, I'm 23 and I’m from Hà Nội, Vietnam. I'm currently studying fashion design at the University of Industrial Fine Art. I first heard about the Real Leather Stay Different competition through a workshop held at my school. I think it’s a really meaningful competition because it inspires designers to be creative with leather across different areas like fashion, footwear, and accessories. I wish the competition great success, and I hope to learn from many other talented designers. I’m really grateful for this opportunity to be creative and grow as a designer.

Po Klong Garai Ascending Heel

Category: Footwear

Competitions: Vietnam

Inspired by the Po Klong Garai tower, one of the most iconic Cham Pa architectural structures still well-preserved in Ninh Thuận, this design is a blend of ancient heritage and contemporary fashion. Po Klong Garai tower is located on Trầu Hill, Đô Vinh ward, Phan Rang – Tháp Chàm city, Ninh Thuận province, about 9–12 km from the city center, making it easy for visitors to explore along with nearby sites like Trùng Sơn Cổ Tự pagoda. The tower complex was built in the late 13th to early 14th century, during the reign of King Shihavaman (Chế Mân), to honor King Po Klong Garai (1151–1205) – a ruler who made significant contributions to the Cham Pa kingdom. The reason I chose Po Klong Garai tower as the inspiration for this submission is that I wanted to introduce a heritage from my homeland to the world. Although I was born and raised in Hà Nội, this is where my grandfather lived. I wanted the memories I share with him in this place to become visible – something that can be seen – through this design. The tall, strong form of the tower becomes the starting point for the shoe’s design – a symbol of pride, inner strength, and sacred beauty. The red-brown color palette recalls the color of fired brick, combined with black to create depth and a modern contrast. The flowing lines and layered structures are developed from traditional Cham motifs, reinterpreting the spirit of the architecture through a contemporary fashion lens. This design is not just a product but also a tribute to heritage, where the past is elevated and reborn in the form of contemporary beauty.
