EKARI FOOTWEAR

I’m Felloce Howa, Director of Ekari Footwear, and I’m thrilled to participate in the 2025 Design Showcase Competition with my project, Unity Flag Shoes. This initiative is driven by my passion for celebrating Malawian culture, supporting local artisans, and promoting sustainability in fashion. Inspired by our national identity, the Unity Flag Shoes are crafted using the colors of the Malawi flag and made entirely from locally sourced materials such as leather, recycled fabrics, and bamboo. My journey in footwear design began in 1999 when I recognized an opportunity to reduce Malawi’s dependence on imported shoes. Since then, I’ve been committed to designing quality, locally made footwear that reflects our heritage and values. Unity Flag Shoes represents a powerful blend of innovation, cultural expression, and environmental responsibility. What sets this project apart is its commitment to 100% local sourcing and eco-conscious design, making each pair both stylish and meaningful. The shoes are tailored for a youthful, socially aware audience—including sports enthusiasts—who appreciate individuality, sustainability, and cultural authenticity. By participating in this competition, I hope to highlight the potential of sustainable fashion in Malawi and bring visibility to local talent and craftsmanship. This platform also offers an exciting opportunity to exchange ideas with fellow creatives and contribute to a growing movement that prioritizes both cultural pride and environmental stewardship. I'm eager to share my vision and to be inspired by the innovative minds shaping the future of fashion.

The Unity Flag Shoes project aims to create affordable, sustainable, and eco-friendly shoes that promote unity and cultural identity. The shoes will feature a unique design incorporating black, red, and green leather, symbolizing unity in Malawi. Sustainable Materials: 1.Cow Leather: Black, red, and green leather used for the upper material, representing unity and cultural identity. 2.Beer Filters: Locally sourced beer filters used for the insole board and counter. 3.Recycled Plastic: Used for the shank, reducing waste and promoting sustainability. 4.Leather Jacket and Sponge: Utilized for the foot bed, providing comfort and cushioning. 5.Old Car Tyres: Repurposed for the soles, adding durability and reducing waste. The shoes will be priced low, making them accessible to those who cannot afford traditional leather shoes. Eco-friendly materials will be used to reduce waste and promote environmental sustainability. The shoes celebrate Malawi's unity and cultural identity. The Unity Flag Shoes project combines innovative design, sustainability, and cultural significance, creating a unique product that benefits both the wearer and the environment. By making shoes that are both affordable and eco-friendly, this project contributes to a more sustainable future for Malawi.
