Korita

Competitions: International

The Korita bag is a unique handbag with a distinct oval or slightly crescent shape. Its design is evidently inspired by the tamaraw which is a critically endangered buffalo endemic to Mindoro, Philippines, a significant symbol of the province. This inspiration is particularly evident in the bag's overall design, which is intended to mimic the shape of a tamaraw's head, specifically its horns, as the name "Korita" is derived from the Tagalog word "korneta" meaning "horn" of a specfic animal, but in this case-- a horn of a tamaraw. The bag features two primary colors: a darker brown that forms the outer edges and a lighter, tan or beige color that fills the central panels. The strap is integrated into the top of the bag, allowing it to be carried comfortably. Adding to its cultural significance, the bag's surface is adorned with intricate patterns and designs. These patterns are inspired by the Mangyan script found in "ambahan" (a poetic form) and the traditional Mangyan designs and patterns seen in "pakudos" bead bracelets. This integration of local script and traditional patterns further emphasizes the bag's connection to the cultural heritage of Mindoro and the Mangyan indigenous people. A small tassel or charm, also in a complementary brown color, hangs from one side of the bag, adding a subtle decorative element.
