Vietnam

My name is Phạm Thị Ngọc Liên, a second-year student majoring in Footwear Technology at Ho Chi Minh City College of Industry and Trade. I chose this field because of my passion for footwear and my desire to create products that are not only fashionable but also highly functional. Throughout my studies, I have acquired specialized knowledge such as shoe sketching, footwear design, shoemaking techniques, pattern making, and using design software. I am particularly passionate about designs that embody traditional cultural elements, yet are expressed through a modern lens — this is the design philosophy I pursue. In each design, I always ask myself how I can blend the traditional cultural values of my country with contemporary trends to create products that are both stylish and practical. I have a strong preference for cowhide leather due to its durability, character, and long-lasting value, especially because it is environmentally friendly. My designs always aim to maximize material usage, minimize waste, and prioritize the recyclability of materials after the product’s life cycle.

Lạc Việt - Bước chân Lạc Hồng

Category: Footwear

Competitions: Vietnam

Lac Viet – The Footsteps of the Lac Hong Spirit “Lạc Việt” refers to an ancient tribe that lived in the Red River Delta region and is considered the ancestor of modern Vietnamese people. The name evokes the roots, identity, and long-standing cultural heritage of Vietnam. “Footsteps” symbolize the journey of growth, expansion, discovery, and the spirit of the nation carried with every step. “Lạc Hồng” is a sacred term representing the descendants of Lạc Long Quân and Âu Cơ — the legendary ancestors of the Vietnamese people. It is a proud way to refer to the Vietnamese lineage, ancestry, and national identity. More than just a pair of shoes, this design is a symphony of cultural heritage – a harmonious fusion of Eastern cultural essence and Western craftsmanship. Western technique meets Eastern spirit. A national identity intertwined with modern sensibility – where every step carries the sacred soul of Vietnam. The tall, structured harness boot silhouette is selected to symbolize protection – a metaphor for the resilience and unyielding spirit of the Lac Viet people. At the core of the design lies high-quality full-grain cow leather – specifically nubuck and vegetable-tanned leather – chosen for their natural beauty, durability, and deep connection to traditional craftsmanship. The soft, velvety texture of nubuck adds warmth and authenticity, while vegetable-tanned leather reflects sustainable values and artisanal heritage. The lacing system moves from the back heel to the front, symbolizing the Vietnamese spirit of always remembering the past while moving forward with innovation and creativity. The natural richness of the leather is enhanced using laser engraving, delicately etching motifs inspired by the Ngoc Lu bronze drum – such as the sun and the sacred Lạc bird – as well as the full brogue W-shaped details. This technique ensures fine precision while honoring ancient culture. Technically, the design applies the Blake stitching construction, connecting the leather sole and upper with both strength and flexibility. The outsole combines rubber and vegetable-tanned leather, ensuring comfort and durability. All elements come together in a design that stands as a cultural bridge, where East meets West in a distinctive “Lac Viet” interpretation – where leather becomes not just a material, but a memory, a spirit, and an identity.
