Sculpted Body - The Leather Spiral Jacket
Category: Apparel
Competitions: International
The Leather Spiral Jacket is a central piece from Kyungah Jo’s Sculpted Body collection, an exploration of the intersection between body, clothing, and sculpture. This jacket redefines the relationship between garment and wearer through a spiral construction that follows the natural curves of the human form. Rather than relying on conventional straight seam lines, the jacket is sculpted in a continuous, flowing spiral that wraps and contours the body like a second skin. Crafted from dead stock suede sourced from a local leather shop, the Leather Spiral Jacket places sustainability at its core. The irregular spiral pattern naturally lends itself to the use of off-cuts and leather scraps, minimising waste while maximising design potential. This flexible pattern approach also invites experimentation with a wide variety of leathers and materials, giving new life to pieces that might otherwise be discarded. The spiral construction highlights Jo’s expertise in experimental pattern cutting. Its adaptable structure allows for intuitive tailoring across diverse body shapes, offering inclusive fit possibilities without compromising aesthetic integrity. Each panel is part of a continuous, sculptural form, challenging traditional garment construction and offering a fresh perspective on both design and material efficiency. Through this piece, Kyungah Jo presents leather not merely as a material, but as a sculptural medium, reshaping how we perceive, wear, and interact with clothing.
