Akshara Pandey

National Institute of Fashion Technology

I am Akshara Pandey, a Fashion and Lifestyle Accessories student at NIFT Bhopal with a strong passion for accessory design, material innovation, and Indian craftsmanship. I believe that design is a powerful medium to bridge tradition and modernity, creating products that are both culturally meaningful and relevant to contemporary lifestyles. My creative process is driven by research, storytelling, and a keen interest in exploring sustainable and craft-based design solutions. Throughout my academic journey, I have worked on projects involving fashion jewellery, handbags, footwear, and lifestyle accessories, strengthening my skills in concept development, material exploration, prototyping, and design visualisation. I am proficient in Adobe Illustrator and enjoy experimenting with diverse materials and handcrafted techniques to create products that combine functionality with aesthetics. I have actively participated in national-level design competitions, including the Bharat Tex International Student Design Competition, where I explored innovative design solutions inspired by Indian textiles and craftsmanship. I also participated in the Green Earth Challenge by PJMT, which encouraged sustainable thinking and responsible design practices. These experiences have enhanced my ability to work under deadlines, think critically, and develop design concepts that address real-world challenges while maintaining creativity and originality. As a curious, dedicated, and detail-oriented designer, I embrace opportunities that allow me to learn, collaborate, and innovate. My long-term goal is to contribute to the fashion and lifestyle accessories industry by creating impactful products that celebrate India's rich craft heritage while embracing sustainability, functionality, and contemporary design for a global audience.

JEVA: The Essence of Life

Category: Footwear

Competitions: International

JEVA, derived from the Sanskrit word Jeeva, meaning "life," is a celebration of living traditions, craftsmanship, and conscious design. It is rooted in the belief that sustainability extends beyond the choice of materials—it also lies in preserving indigenous crafts, empowering artisan communities, and ensuring that centuries-old traditions continue to evolve with changing lifestyles. JEVA reimagines the timeless Kolhapuri sandal, breathing new life into one of India's oldest leather footwear crafts while preserving its cultural identity and artisanal essence. Inspired by the journey of a leaf, the design symbolizes growth, resilience, renewal, and the deep connection between nature and life. Just as a leaf remains rooted while adapting to changing seasons, JEVA reflects the evolution of the Kolhapuri sandal without losing its heritage. The flowing leaf-inspired upper, enhanced with intricate hand-braided leather, represents the veins that carry life, becoming a metaphor for the generations of artisans who have passed down their knowledge, skills, and stories through handcrafted traditions. At the heart of JEVA is the philosophy of "One Craft, Three Journeys." The sandal transforms into three versatile styles, making it suitable for everyday wear, festive celebrations, and contemporary occasions. Instead of purchasing multiple pairs of footwear, the wearer can adapt a single handcrafted product to different moments and lifestyles. This multifunctional approach encourages slow fashion, promoting longevity, emotional attachment, and mindful consumption—values that have always been inherent in authentic Kolhapuri craftsmanship, where products are handcrafted to last, repaired when needed, and cherished across generations. Crafted using full-grain cattle leather, genuine goat leather braiding, natural rubber, solid brass hardware, and traditional Babul gum adhesive, JEVA balances authenticity with modern comfort through a cushioned footbed and supportive heel strap. Every material has been consciously selected to honour the original craft while enhancing durability and wearability. More than a sandal, JEVA is a story woven into every braid, every stitch, and every step. It celebrates the idea that preserving India's indigenous crafts is itself an act of sustainability, proving that heritage and innovation can coexist. By connecting storytelling with functionality, JEVA transforms a traditional craft into a contemporary lifestyle product that carries the essence of life, culture, and conscious design forward for future generations.
