DEDAN KIMATHI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

I am a leather technology final-year student from Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, where I specialize in the design and production of leather goods and footwear. With strong expertise in design, pattern making, assembling, and finishing, I have developed a comprehensive understanding of the leather industry, from concept to final product. My work is rooted in innovation and problem-solving. I am passionate about using my technical skills and creative thinking to design products that are not only beautiful but also practical and purposeful. I strive to develop sustainable solutions that address real-world needs. Driven by a desire to push boundaries and reimagine traditional craftsmanship, I aim to contribute fresh, functional, and meaningful designs to the evolving world of African leather fashion.

Insulated Leather Shark Bag with Hand-Beaded Detail and Attached Umbrella

Category: Accessories

Competitions: Africa

The Baby Shark Bag is a creative, child-friendly insulated bag designed to keep food warm, promote good health, and celebrate African culture — all while supporting sustainable design. As a final-year design student at Dedan Kimathi University, I was inspired to create this innovative bag after observing schoolchildren carrying meals from home during the rainy season. By lunchtime, their food was often cold — a discomfort that also raises the risk of foodborne illness. To address this, I developed a playful yet highly functional bag that maintains food temperature and encourages regular use among children. The bag’s exterior is crafted from real cowhide leather, covering over 50% of the surface area, which aligns with slow fashion principles due to its durability and resistance to wear. Inside, I used thermal foil lining to preserve warmth and added a layer of repurposed skives — thin offcuts from leather production — for extra insulation and padding. These skives also fill out the shark-shaped fins and tail, making them soft, safe, and sustainable. The design isn’t just practical; it’s imaginative. The fun shark silhouette captures children’s attention and transforms the bag into a companion they’re proud to carry. A cleverly concealed umbrella holder adds even more utility, especially during the rainy season, ensuring children are always prepared for the weather. To ground the design in African identity, the bag features traditional hand-beaded embellishments made by local artisans. These details celebrate our heritage, support local craftsmanship, and preserve traditional techniques — all while giving the bag a unique and culturally rich aesthetic. Sustainability lies at the heart of the Baby Shark Bag. From upcycled materials and durable construction to the encouragement of home-packed meals over disposable alternatives, every element reflects care for the environment. A waterproof lining adds an extra layer of protection, ensuring that the contents remain safe and dry no matter the weather. More than just an accessory, the Baby Shark Bag is a fusion of creativity, culture, and care. It’s a child-centered, environmentally conscious design that brings warmth, joy, and a sense of pride to the young ones who carry it — and a meaningful contribution to the future of sustainable fashion in Africa.
