My name is Thanh Tuyen , and I am currently a student majoring in footwear design and production. I have a strong passion for creativity and cultural inspiration. For my project, I chose to develop an idea based on the traditional mat weaving craft of Dinh Yen village in Dong Thap Province, which is also my hometown. This craft is well known for its handmade techniques, natural materials, and cultural significance. Through this project, I aim to transform the values of traditional mat weaving into modern footwear design. I explore how woven textures, patterns, and materials can be applied to high-top sneakers, creating a balance between tradition and contemporary fashion. To me, this is not only a design challenge but also a way to preserve and promote local craftsmanship in a creative way. During my studies, I continuously improve my skills in design, materials, and production processes. In the future, I hope to create footwear products that reflect identity, sustainability, and innovation. Thank you

FROM MAT TO MODERN STEPS

This project explores the transformation of traditional woven sedge from Dinh Yen village, Dong Thap Province, into a modern high-top sneaker design. Inspired by the long-standing mat weaving craft of my hometown, the project focuses on preserving cultural identity while adapting it to contemporary fashion trends. The woven sedge material, known for its natural texture and handmade quality, is reinterpreted as a key design element in the upper structure of the shoe. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern sneaker aesthetics, the design creates a unique balance between heritage and innovation. The project also considers functionality, comfort, and durability, ensuring that the product is not only visually appealing but also practical for everyday use. Special attention is given to material selection and construction techniques to maintain the integrity of the woven structure while enhancing performance. In addition, sustainability plays an important role in this concept. Using natural and locally sourced materials helps reduce environmental impact and supports traditional craft communities. Through this project, I aim to highlight the value of cultural heritage and demonstrate how it can be integrated into modern product design, creating footwear that is meaningful, innovative, and reflective of local identity.
