Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design Jerusalem

Hello, My name is Islam Nashef, a 23-year-old student at the Department of Jewelry and Fashion Design at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. I am currently in my final year of studies. My primary focus lies in shoemaking design and leather craftsmanship, where I merge traditional techniques with contemporary design. I am passionate about creating functional and aesthetically unique footwear, combining form, comfort, and high-quality materialsafts

MACHO

Category: Footwear

Competitions: International

This work is a material and visual exploration of power and presence through the design of a bold, sculptural shoe. The piece was developed using vegetable-tanned Cuoio leather, chosen for its density and visual depth qualities that allowed the material to be shaped almost like a carved object rather than a conventional shoe. Throughout the making process, the leather revealed characteristics similar to wood: structured, solid, and refined, giving the final form a strong architectural identity. The shoe was constructed by layering leather piece by piece, highlighting the craftsmanship of traditional leatherworking while reinterpreting it through a contemporary design language. The design draws inspiration from the exaggerated image of the macho man, featuring a long sharply curved toe and broad geometric proportions. A layered detail slightly opens to reveal another form beneath it, creating the impression of one “organ” emerging from another, a gesture symbolizing raw power and exposure. Although the material is solid, the shoe remains comfortable through the use of a custom anatomical last shaped around the natural form of the foot. The final piece combines craftsmanship, structure, and identity into a wearable sculptural object.

Shields

This collection explores the tension between the ego’s desire to protect, control, and impress, and the contrasting emotions of vulnerability, tenderness, and a deep yearning for love — all while seeking a renewed sense of inner harmony. The garments are designed with elements that resemble armor, evoking a modern-day warrior aesthetic. Leather was chosen as the primary material for its strength and adaptability, serving both as a durable fabric and a symbolic shield — much like skin, which safeguards the body’s fragility. The designs range from structured, tailored silhouettes that emphasize the body’s shape to looser, more fluid forms that incorporate supportive elements. A zigzag stitch is used as a functional technique for connecting multiple seams. The black-and-white palette reflects the interplay of opposing emotional forces. Ultimately, the look aims to project confidence — even in moments of inner doubt.
