Jiangxi Institute of Fashion Technology

I am a fashion design student from Jiangxi Institute of Fashion Technology, focused on blending structuralist tailoring with subtle oriental elements and real leather. For this competition, my series Leather Tales Under the Hat, Boundless Self uses over 50% top-grain leather—matte, glossy and hand-dyed gradient versions—paired with knit and blends. I reimagine classic details like diagonal closures and frog buttons via deconstructed cuts, letting the leather’s natural texture lead, echoing the "Real Leather, Real Self" spirit.

This collection Story of Leather Under the Eaves · Boundless Self revolves around genuine leather and the idea of breaking fashion stereotypes. The main materials include 60% matte top-grain cowhide, 15% hand oil-dyed gradient cowhide, 15% drapey worsted blend and 10% soft knit. The natural grain and folds of leather are fully retained without redundant printing. Matte treatment and hand oil dyeing present distinctive texture, practicing sustainable leather design and interpreting the core of Real Leather. It combines neo-Chinese aesthetics with modern deconstructive tailoring. Curved lines of traditional Chinese upturned eaves are transformed into garment cutting lines and layered silhouettes. Asymmetric plackets and stacked leather patches ease leather’s heaviness; lightweight worsted fabric and soft knit form a rigid-soft texture contrast. The series adopts a minimalist monochrome palette of pure black, dark grey and silver grey to highlight delicate leather grain. Gender-free silhouettes break the shackles of fixed styles, conveying the attitude of adhering to inner self and echoing the competition theme “Real Leather. Stay Different”.

This collection is titled Story of Leather Under the Hat · Boundless Self, centered on genuine leather’s natural texture and the spiritual concept of breaking stereotypes. Taking eco-friendly top-grain cowhide as the core material, the design retains original leather grain and natural folds without excessive printing or covering. Through matte finishing and hand oil-dyeing craftsmanship, it presents unique texture changes, inheriting the sustainable concept of recycled leather and interpreting the essence of Real Leather. Combining neo-Chinese aesthetics and avant-garde western deconstruction, the series integrates traditional Hanfu cross-collar details and hand-made frog buttons with asymmetric suit tailoring. The gender-free silhouette breaks the limitations of traditional clothing styles. Matched with wide-brimmed hat modeling to weaken external appearance labels, the design conveys the attitude of escaping secular definition and adhering to inner authenticity. Blending classical Oriental subtlety and modern minimalist avant-garde, the work takes unique leather texture as the carrier, perfectly echoing the competition’s core spirit of staying different and staying true to self.
