Mutune Muthoki

My name is Jacqueline Mutune, and I am a leather designer from Thonge Leather, a premium leather brand based in Nairobi, Kenya. At Thonge Leather, we focus on handcrafted leather goods that combine refined aesthetics, durability, and functional design. My journey into leather design is rooted in a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and material integrity. I am particularly drawn to full-grain cowhide because of how it ages, develops character, and tells a story over time. As a designer, I approach each product with intention. I think about the end user first, how the piece will be carried, used, and experienced daily. I believe leather should not only look luxurious but also serve a clear purpose in a modern lifestyle. Over the years, I have worked on a range of products including executive bags, crossbody slings, travel wallets, corporate gifts, and custom accessories for high-end clients. My design process begins with research and sketching, followed by pattern development, material selection, prototyping, and refinement. I pay close attention to proportion, stitching precision, edge finishing, and hardware selection because small details define premium quality. I am also intentional about incorporating subtle African elements into contemporary silhouettes, allowing our products to represent both global standards and local identity. Participating in this leather competition is an opportunity for me to showcase the craftsmanship and design philosophy behind Thonge Leather. I see design as a balance between art and function, tradition and innovation. Through this platform, I aim to demonstrate that African leather brands can compete at the highest level while remaining authentic to their roots and committed to excellence.
