Maria Izabel Oliveira Rodrigues

Faculdade Belas Artes

I am a creative driven by purpose. I am 26 years old and a Fashion student, but before that, I am someone who sees fashion as a language, a political tool, and a means of shaping identity. My journey has not been linear. I had to pause my studies due to health challenges and emotional vulnerability, and returning required courage. Starting over in a new class, within an elitist environment while attending on a scholarship, strengthened my resilience, social awareness, and deepened my perspective on representation and belonging. Today, these experiences inform everything I create. I have a deep interest in culture especially the culture of my own country Afro-Brazilian aesthetics, identity, and the movements that emerge from the margins before transforming the center. I believe fashion is a space of symbolic power, and I want to occupy that space with both strategy and sensitivity. I seek to develop projects that bring together concept, craftsmanship, and responsibility, exploring materiality as an essential part of communicating meaning. To me, every material choice carries intention, and creating is, above all, a conscious act. This reinforces my belief that design must always be aligned with concept, positioning, and purpose. My research and creative practice exist at the intersection of fashion, culture, art, and communication. I strive to develop projects that celebrate identities, tell authentic stories, and broaden perspectives. For me, creating is an act of responsibility. I am applying for this competition because I believe in the power of international exchange, the value of expanding creative perspectives, and the importance of bringing a thoughtful, critical, and distinctly Brazilian point of view to global spaces. More than recognition, I am seeking growth, meaningful connections, and lasting impact.

‘Caminhos’ is a collection that reconnects with Afro-Brazilian ancestry through braided aesthetics and the pathways traced by the Black body. Inspired by the journeys of braiders and the act of stepping firmly into territories of resistance, the piece represents identity, memory, and movement.”
