Daughter of won nyaci

Category: Apparel

Competitions: Africa

TITLE: DOWN [Daughter of Won Nyaci] Explores the narrative of traditional weaving, power in the traditional setting while contrasting it with todays setting. The garment titled ‘DOWN’ to abbreviate Daughter of Won Nyaci. Won Nyaci, a prominent leader in the traditional setting of the Langi people of Northern Uganda. This garment embodies the narrative of power, status and personal expression. It expresses the rich craftmanship of weaving of the Langi people while with its tight body fit it symbolizes the price with which power and status comes with as from the look, the body fit is tightly on the body shape. Society and tradition build walls in the name of rules, how to do things which becomes culture and this dress critiques such narratives with the use of segmented bodice blocks and bending [the-so called rules of fashion] and re-imaging a perfect todays dress yet imperfect; this is to question individual perception of the costume when in contact with art or even experience.
