NGƯ MÔN

The “Ngư Môn” collection is inspired by the folk painting “The Carp Leaping over the Dragon Gate” – a representative work of the Hàng Trống painting style, commonly displayed during the Lunar New Year. The image of the carp ascending the falls to transform into a dragon represents the aspiration to rise to new heights. Besides, the painting is a metaphor for reminding people to cultivate and improve their own abilities. This collection harmoniously blends traditional aesthetics with contemporary fashion. Drawing from the painting's symbolism, I incorporated key motifs such as carp, clouds, waves, and gate as the foundation for the design. Front and back panel of the bag is crafted from cowhide leather, shaped and detailed by stylizing cloud and wave patterns. These motifs are layered using cut and stitched leather to create a multi-dimensional surface that adds visual depth. The metal handle, symbolizing the “dargon gate” which is a threshold of transformation and challenge, is simplified into three interconnected arches, evoking the image of an open gate leading to a breakthrough. At the center of the bag’s front is a sun flanked by five carp of varying sizes swimming upstream, depicted using laser-cutting and leather carving techniques to bring out raised contours and patchs. The color palette reflects the symbolic journey of the carp: blue for water, red for the sky, and gold for light—traditional tones often seen in folk paintings, but also symbolizing movement and the journey through the rapids. The “The Carp Leaping over the Dragon Gate” handbag is a seamless integration of cultural artistry and modern design. It aspires not only to deliver aesthetic appeal but also to carry deep cultural significance. I hope this design resonates with young individuals who value originality, honor their heritage, and continually strive for growth and transformation in life.
