Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts

Other

As an undergraduate student majoring in design at Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, I have been immersed in the study of material application and creative design for leather-related works since my enrollment in 2023. My academic training focuses on integrating traditional craft aesthetics with modern functional design, exploring how leather textures, craftsmanship and structural innovation can convey unique artistic expression. I am keen to observe the intersection of daily usability and avant-garde design, and often conduct iterative experiments on material processing to balance aesthetic presentation and practical value. This competition offers me a precious international platform to exchange ideas with global peers, showcase my creative thinking on leather design, and absorb diversified industry insights to further polish my design logic and creative output.

空礁·Empty Reef

Category: Apparel

Competitions: China Mainland

Titled "Empty Reef", this design draws inspiration from coral bleaching, a stark symbol of marine ecological degradation. The process began with exploring coral textures using stone clay, creating fragmented plate shapes that were translated into multiple draping samples to refine the silhouette. The final garment is crafted primarily from sustainable white leather, which has been processed with laser cutting, thinning and polishing, and manual gathering techniques. These methods recreate the delicate, fading form of bleached coral while emphasizing the natural texture and durability of real leather. The work aims to use fashion as a medium to raise awareness of ocean conservation, demonstrating how innovative leather craftsmanship can merge with environmental concepts to create sustainable, meaningful design.
