TZU-JUNG Ting

Lunghwa University of Science and Technology

I am a university student who enjoys observing the people and things around me, and I like to incorporate the information and inspiration I gather into my design work. I also gain a lot of ideas through conversations and sharing with friends. I believe that design is a practice of empathy. In the future, I hope to continue exploring the possibilities of materials and storytelling, transforming my sensitivity and observational insights into a design language that resonates more deeply with others.

This design draws inspiration from the stingray, merging its posture as it lies hidden beneath the ocean floor in wait for prey with the modern human condition—where adapting to society often requires concealing one’s true self and assuming various roles. The cape is composed of multiple leather pieces shaped like stingrays, each with unique contours. Layered like scales and reminiscent of armor, they embody the contrast between the toughness of external defense and the softness within. The connected hood incorporates the flowing lines of the stingray’s head and fins, creating a strong sense of enclosure. This design transforms the wearer into a drifter at the margins of the world—both an observer and an agent poised to act. At the front, a stingray-shaped pouch serves not only as a functional storage element but also as the visual centerpiece of the entire look. More than just a bag, it is an extension of the cape—symbolizing the “birth of a role” and representing the shell people construct for self-protection and social adaptation. The design employs deep navy and misty black leathers to evoke the serenity and mystery of the deep sea through a subdued yet refined aesthetic. In the urban jungle, the wearer moves like a stingray in the ocean’s depths—elegant, enigmatic, and elusive.
