Vasundhara Singh Bhati

SCHOLA Academy, Florence, Italy

My name is Vasundhara Singh Bhati. I'm a 23 year old aesthete from India looking to make her way into the world of art & design. I've in particular always been fascinated with bags. These vessels that carry the essence of a being- our sustenance, secrets, vices, culture, history. They offer a glimpse of a person's psychological framework-are they messy or organised, loud or understated, utilitarian or decorative? Though brimming with ideas, I lacked the practical know-how to enable me to bring my designs to life, which prompted me to join the SCHOLA leather bag-making program in Florence. The five jam packed months I spent there gave me a whole new appreciation for craftsmanship and helped me actualise some ideas that had been brewing in my head for a long time. The following is what I developed there. My bags sit at the intersection of art and design. They are made to be utilitarian, but are also singularly unique, commenting on the larger cultural landscape.

The collection is an exploration of the paradoxical, amorphous nature of the female form. Under our patriarchal society, the female body becomes a political pawn-its form morphed, battered, and violated, to fit the narrative of patriarchy at every particular moment in time. As a result women's bodies are objectified, whether they are sexualised, deified, or maternalised. But always, a possession. Historically, men have dictated the way women's bodies are exposed or hidden. It is violently exposed to cater to the salivating, heterosexual, male gaze, or it is deified, turned into nothing but a vessel of fertility, stripped of any individual desire existing outside of motherhood. In both cases, women are robbed of their basic humanity. My bag aims to combat this binary and depict women divorced from male expectations; existing in a state of multiplicity. The form is inspired by ancient fertility goddesses/maternal figures. But, at the same time, the woman is also proudly exhibiting her sexuality by wearing a provocative outfit. She is exerting her agency, even though this might get her labelled as an exhibitionist, attention-whore, or pick-me.
