Karyll Animas

Iloilo Science and Technology University

Fashion Design and Merchandising

Bags, Womenswear, Sustainable Design

I am is Karyll Animas, I am 20 years old. I am currently on my 3rd year studying Fashion design and merchandising at Iloilo Science and Technology University, College of Industrial Technology, Fashion and Wellness Department . It is in Iloilo City, central of the Philippines. My idea of leather fashion accessories is to make it culturally relevant for my country while being visual. It is something with just a drop of ethnicity but with international flare. My entry is inspired by Pintados Bakya—the ancient painted men and women of the Philippines, many of whom are from the indigenous peoples in Panay Island where I live. Young people like us are into body tattoo which is really a traditional art form in our ancient Filipino culture. I go back to its roots and create my modern eco-interpretations of them as well. I also went back to our traditional wooden clogs called Bakya. I marry the design elements of Pintados and Bakya to create a exciting new form of footwear. I learn both leather and wood are most prefered sustainable materials for accessories. So this is super exciting for me. From my moodboard to my technical flats, I have in mind our local street leather footwear artisans in my city called Zapateros , whose skills date back from the Spanish and American colonial period in the Philippines. To collaborate with them, I am happy to bring back to the community this project competition so it becomes purposeful for me and for all.
