My collection is inspired by my grandad's journey driving groups of travellers along the Hippie Trail during the 1970s. As he travelled through Europe, Yugoslavia, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India, he photographed the places he visited and collected mementos that became the starting point for my research. His stories, together with the freedom and creativity of the Flower Power movement, inspired me to create a modern leather collection that celebrates individuality, craftsmanship and longevity. Using my grandad's photographs alongside historical illustrations, I traced and digitally redrew original floral motifs in Adobe Illustrator. The artwork was then laser cut into suede and assembled into patchwork panels, with scalloped edges adding a handcrafted finish inspired by the 1970s. The collection was designed to celebrate craftsmanship while making thoughtful use of materials. The majority of the suede was sourced from deadstock leather, including ex-Pittards cow split suede. Working with smaller pieces of surplus leather naturally informed the patchwork construction, allowing me to maximise material use while creating a distinctive visual identity. Leather was central to the design process, not simply the final material choice. Its durability and structure allowed intricate floral motifs and scalloped edges to be precision laser cut while maintaining a clean, high-quality finish. By combining heavyweight and lightweight cow split suede with goat suede in areas requiring greater flexibility, the collection balances structure, comfort and durability. Although developed as a runway collection, the floral patchwork aesthetic could be adapted into a commercial capsule collection of suede jackets, waistcoats, skirts, shorts and leather accessories. Inspired by a personal family story and designed to be worn, repaired and treasured for years, the collection encourages a lasting emotional connection while demonstrating how heritage craftsmanship and contemporary manufacturing can transform surplus leather into timeless products that challenge the cycle of fast fashion.
