The Unravelling of Persephone

The Unravelling of Persephone is a collection that traces the transformation of the Greek goddess Persephone from the innocent daughter of Demeter to the formidable Queen of the Underworld. Through sculptural leather craftsmanship and engineered movement, the collection explores transformation, duality, and the perpetual cycles that shape both mythology and our own existence. The Goddess of Spring marks the beginning of this narrative, capturing Persephone before her descent, when she embodies renewal, abundance, and the promise of new life. Constructed almost entirely from hand-crafted sheep nappa leather florals, the garment reimagines leather as a material of delicacy rather than rigidity. Hundreds of individually shaped petals transform the surface into a living landscape, celebrating the versatility of leather through texture, movement, and sculptural form. The restrained palette of black and deep red, inspired by the pigments of unearthed Ancient Greek pottery, reinterprets spring through an avant-garde couture lens. By removing the expectation of vibrant florals, the monochromatic palette allows the craftsmanship, silhouette, and intricate surface development to become the focus. Material efficiency informed every stage of the design process. Each flower was cut from offcuts generated during the construction of other garments within the collection, allowing smaller remnants and naturally blemished areas of the hide to be repurposed rather than discarded. Instead of concealing leather’s natural characteristics, the design embraces them, demonstrating how thoughtful craftsmanship can maximise the value of a material already created as a by-product of the food industry. For me, sustainability is not only about reducing waste but about creating objects with emotional longevity. Pieces that are treasured, repaired, and preserved rather than replaced. The oversized poisonous bloom draped across the shoulder acts as both adornment and omen. It foreshadows Persephone’s inevitable descent while drawing a parallel with our own environment, where human intervention continues to alter the relationship between people, flora, and fauna. Beauty and fragility coexist, reminding us that creation and destruction have always existed side by side. Movement forms the conceptual heart of the garment. An engineered perpetual motion mechanism animates the floral structures, referencing the eternal changing of the seasons that defines Persephone’s myth. More than a mechanical feature, the movement becomes a metaphor for life’s only constant: change. The garment is never entirely still, embodying transformation through both narrative and physical motion. Every aspect of this project was conceived and executed by me. I developed the research, concept, pattern cutting, draping, material sourcing, surface development, and construction, while engineering the movement mechanism using laser-cut and hand-painted Mylar sheets, a material traditionally reserved for permanent pattern production. I also designed and produced the accompanying leather bag and footwear, before art directing, styling, photographing, and creating the makeup and headpiece for the final shoot imagery, resulting in a fully realised visual narrative. The story of Persephone has fascinated me for years because it reminds us that transformation is inevitable, but growth is a choice. The Goddess of Spring is ultimately a celebration of craftsmanship, permanence, and renewal. By transforming a durable natural material into an intricate couture surface built to endure, the project challenges the disposability of fast fashion and demonstrates how leather can become both a medium for storytelling and an heirloom designed to be cherished across generations.
