Poles Apart

This design brings forward my passion for wardrobe design in films. The design is titled "Poles Apart" as it brings together the wardrobes of two contrasting films- "Poor Things" and "Padmaavat". The Indian Bollywood film "Padmaavat" encouraged the use of intricate embroideries and details as it displays the impeccable Indian craftsmanship by dressing the protagonist, a 13th Century Rajput queen in Indian Traditional attire. "Poor Things", on the other hand, inspired the use of exaggerated and unique silhouettes. Both elements are crucial while designing for the future and sustainability. The Indian textile techniques have been living for centuries and create timeless pieces with cultural significance. A practical re-usable garment design is used far more than a garment's average life. This design makes use of an inner top, which will be made by up-cycling my mom's vintage cotton sari. The sari top will be further adorned with leather scraps embroidery. The dress made in cowhide leather has removable skirt and sleeves. The skirt and sleeves can be attached using an industrial one way zipper. This leaves room for design changes to the top. The original sleeves can be switched with modern and unique draped sleeves in the future. Since the skirt is removable, the top can also be styled with different bottoms.
