Breath Of The Pine

We are living in an era where climate change is no longer a prediction, it has become a harsh reality: increasingly violent storms, accelerating ice melt, and extreme temperature fluctuations. One of the factors contributing to this environmental crisis is the enormous volume of waste generated on our planet, including that produced by the fashion industry. Growing up in Northern Vietnam, I became deeply familiar with the stark contrast between the scorching heat of summer and the bitter cold of winter. This climatic extremity has created a paradox of consumer waste. Garments are often worn for only a few months during a specific season before being forgotten, ultimately adding to the growing burden of textile waste. This led me to ask a question: Could a garment evolve to accompany people through every season of the year? The answer emerged when I observed pine cones in their natural environment. In humid conditions, they tightly close their scales to protect their seeds; in dry weather, they open to disperse new life. This biological mechanism became the primary inspiration behind my design. I wanted to create a product that possesses not only aesthetic beauty but also the “intelligence” of nature—a modular system capable of transforming its form to protect the wearer under diverse weather conditions. The design is crafted from genuine cowhide leather. Unlike many fashion materials with short life cycles, leather can be repaired, maintained, and preserved over time. It is not merely a material; it serves as the foundation that enables the product to endure long enough to fully realize its adaptive value. The garment features a three-stage length adjustment system, corresponding to different thermal requirements. It can transform from a dynamic cropped jacket for summer into a mid-length coat, and ultimately into a long manteau for harsh winter conditions. Concealed zipper systems integrated at connection points allow the wearer to easily detach, replace, and reconfigure individual modules. The original short-collar structure is combined with a zipper attachment system, enabling the addition of either a hood or a high collar according to functional needs. To further reinforce the design concept, leather offcuts are repurposed into small scale-like elements and layered onto the shoulders, hips, and garment edges. By securing only one side of each scale to the garment, these components move naturally with the wearer, creating a highly dynamic and visually engaging effect. Instead of owning multiple garments for different seasons, the user needs only one garment capable of structural transformation. ‘Breath of The Pine’ proposes a vision for future fashion in an age of climate change: fewer products, longer life cycles, and a deeper connection between people and the materials they choose to keep.
