THE HINGE LOOP SANDAL

Category: Footwear

The Hinge Loop Sandal is a modular footwear system designed to rethink how shoes are made, used, and valued over time. Instead of treating sandals as disposable fashion items, the project frames them as long-life systems built for repair, replacement, and continuous use. At its core, the design uses a visible hinge mechanism made from recycled aluminium, allowing the sandal to be fully disassembled and serviced. The upper is crafted from vegetable-tanned cattle leather, chosen for its durability and ability to develop character through wear. Natural materials such as cork, hemp, and rubber are used strategically to support comfort, flexibility, and circular material flows. The key innovation of the project is its separation of lifecycles: the leather upper is designed for long-term use, while the outsole is a replaceable component. This reduces waste and extends the life of the product significantly. The name “Hinge Loop” reflects its dual logic—hinge for repairability, loop for circularity—representing a system where products are not discarded but continuously maintained and renewed. The project responds to fast fashion by proposing a slower, more responsible design model where value increases through longevity, repair, and personal connection over time.
