Folding Leather

Category: Design

This project is part of my MA Thesis where I collaborate intimately with the material and the fold. Inspired by a small Moroccan coin purse, I experiment how traditional paper folding techniques (origami) can be applied in leather. After testing different techniques and famous patterns (origami tessellations, twists, and spirals from Roman Remme, Ekaterina Lukasheva, Jun Mitani, Chris K. Palmer…), I propose the fusion of two techniques, leather shaping and leather folding, by creating two small artefacts, a Ball Purse and a Spinning Top. Two objects that enhancing leather properties encompass the playful spirit of origami; inviting us to enjoy and dream.
