Force Field 力场
Category: Apparel
Force Field is a fashion design project that takes Shaolin martial arts as its point of departure, yet it deliberately moves away from religious or cultural symbolism. Instead, the project investigates Shaolin as a pure movement system—specifically, how invisible force travels through the body and leaves temporary traces in space. In Shaolin martial arts, power is never generated by isolated muscle strength; it originates from the ground and moves upward through a continuous pathway, passing through the legs, torso, and shoulders before finally reaching the limbs. Every punch, every rotation, and every weight shift creates a brief, invisible trace in the surrounding space. These traces are called “afterimages” – the lingering evidence of motion that disappears within moments but temporarily activates the space around the body. The project does not study the movements themselves; rather, it focuses on the space activated by movement. Through careful observation and analysis, three key phenomena are extracted: the vortex (a concentrated force field generated by rotational motion), energy expansion (force gradually spreading outward from its center), and fragmented motion (residual traces left in space after an action has ended). These phenomena are further informed by traditional Chinese martial arts concepts of Qi (vital energy circulation) and Jin (internal force). The project investigates how invisible energy extends beyond physical movement and leaves spatial imprints. The design development then translates these dynamics into garment language. The rooted stance of Shaolin – which emphasizes stability through grounding – is transformed into a weighted lower silhouette with enlarged volume, symbolizing the accumulation of force before its release. Force transmission along diagonal pathways generates directional movement, captured through evolving structural lines. After the action ends, fragmented traces remain, expressed as deconstructed leather strands. To materialize the invisible, a series of four leather craft experiments are conducted, each corresponding to a specific state of force: wet‑molding freezes the moment of force expansion into a permanent sculptural lower volume; woven leather represents the accumulation and transmission of force within the body before release, with the woven order gradually dissolving into fragmented strands; cut leather strips record fragmented motion traces left in space after the action ends; and heat‑curling simulates the residual dynamics of force diffusion, creating a sense of lingering energy. The final garment silhouette evolves directly from these experiments. The enlarged lower body volume symbolizes rooting and stability. The transition from tightly woven structures to fragmented leather strands captures the exact moment when energy leaves the body and expands into space. Wet‑molding and heat‑curling together freeze both the expansion and residual diffusion of force. Through weaving, fragmentation, wet‑molding, and heat‑curling, Force Field transforms intangible motion into a tangible spatial structure. This project does not produce ordinary clothing; it produces sculptural leather forms that freeze movement itself. Every detail – from the grounded lower volume to the dissolving leather strands – embodies a rigorous chain of research: observing martial arts dynamics, extracting abstract principles, and materializing them through craft. The result is a wearable record of invisible force, making movement visible as a permanent leather form.
