Freddy's Come To Play
Leather is a known product that holds durability with a high-quality appearance that is very versatile through a range of uses. With my entry I wanted to show the importance of leather and how the garment can be timeless within ones wardrobe, but also show a new life to something that is waste. My concept started looking at the Horror film “A Nightmare on Elm Street” more specifically the character of Freddy Krueger and the workwear he wears within the film. This lead my research to delve into workwear within farming culture and western influences such as cowboy boots and horse gear. Looking closely at the details within horse gear and how they utilise leather, I wanted to combine this with the typical essence of workwear attire. Workwear silhouettes are very interesting, as well as the detail they hold within their construction. As a pair of jeans is a staple in everyone’s wardrobe, notably always being in denim. I wanted to re-create the typical love for jeans with the use of leather. The importance of using leather within my process is to comply with my values of providing longevity and quality. To allow the wearer to have a garment that is long-lasting and can be passed down for futures to come, as well as becoming a loved staple within their own wardrobe. Considering these factors, it is important to think about the effects my garment has to the world- using deadstock leather from accessory companies that were no longer needed. Enabled my design process to reuse leather that was not being used, but to create a beautiful trusty pair of trousers. As well as having the ability of being deconstructed, enables the leather to be repurposed in a new product if no longer needed or wanted for its original intended use.
