Mortals and Myth
Category: Apparel
Mortals and Myth is a nuanced exploration of women in myth, examining how these legends are represented in culture and society. My design was inspired by vilified figures like Medusa, Lilith, and Eve, focusing on snakes as a symbol of agency and empowerment. I drew inspiration from their scaly textures and organic movements, also drawing on religious architecture and artwork where stories like Eve’s are portrayed. I wanted to explore the many facets of their identities/ characters which have been shaped by the way we as society view these women and share their stories. Inspired by their tales’ combination of vulnerability, strength, sensuality, and cruelty, I wanted to show these women as capable and multifaceted individuals. Inspired by symbolic nature of the snake and its shedding skin which protects and evolves, I wanted to juxtapose the strength and durability of leather by forcing the material to become delicate and billowy within my design.
