Jui-Chun Chang

Shih Chien University

My name is Jui-Chun Chang, and I am currently studying Fashion Design at Shih Chien University in Taipei, Taiwan. I have a strong foundation in visual arts and solid technical skills, and I focus on translating everyday observations into a clear and distinctive design language. My work explores the relationship between visual expression and practical execution, aiming to create designs that are both conceptually driven and well-crafted. Throughout my studies, I place strong emphasis on detail, structural logic, and overall finishing. By continuously testing and refining my work, I have developed a precise and disciplined approach to making. I am particularly attentive to how each element contributes to the coherence of the final outcome, ensuring that both concept and execution are clearly communicated. In addition, I am interested in how design can establish a clear identity within a contemporary context. I aim to create work that is not only visually engaging, but also thoughtful in its direction and intention. Looking ahead, I plan to further develop my design practice and pursue advanced studies in France. Through this experience, I hope to expand my international perspective, engage with diverse cultural and industry environments, and gradually refine my own design language while establishing a clear professional direction for my future career.

THE GUARDIAN LION HANDBAG

Category: Accessories

Competitions: Taiwan Region

-THE GUARDIAN LION HANDBAG- Rooted in memories of Tainan, this piece draws inspiration from the guardian lions that stand beneath historic stone archways—figures shaped over time by wind, humidity, and sun. Once perceived as distant and imposing in childhood, these sculptures have gradually transformed into symbols of familiarity and nostalgia. Among them, the stone lions beneath the Pan Gong Archway at the Tainan Confucius Temple left a lasting impression. This design translates their presence into a contemporary object, transforming a fragment of cultural memory into a functional form. The bag becomes a vessel of personal history—carrying the weight of time, place, and emotional attachment into everyday life. The handbag reinterprets the form of a guardian lion through a sculptural, three-dimensional construction. Its faceted geometry echoes the carved structure of traditional stone sculptures, while the surface treatment evokes a weathered, time-worn texture. Leather slit-weaving techniques are applied to articulate the lion’s details, transforming carved stone patterns into a tactile, interlaced surface. Braided leather edges and woven handle finishes establish a continuous material language, reinforcing both structure and craftsmanship. The primary material is a grey-white waxed-edge leather, selected for its subtle, stone-like tonality. To achieve a rigid and defined silhouette, the leather is reinforced with a cardboard backing, allowing for precise, clean-cut edges that emphasize clarity and control in form-making.
