"I AM A PLANKTON"
Category: Design
"I AM A PLANKTON" is a deeply personal project that symbolizes the robustness and durability of mothers through the use of cow leather, and the intricate, delicate nature of planktons represented by 100% silk organza. As a student at the University of Northampton, I faced the challenge of balancing motherhood, marriage, and my studies, particularly after becoming pregnant with my fifth child during my second year. This project is a reflection of my journey and the immense efforts that mothers, especially those from my African background, put into sustaining their families. In many cultures, including mine, being "just" a mother or wife can be undervalued, which inspired me to embark on this project to honour these unsung heroes. Planktons, much like mothers, play a crucial yet often overlooked role in sustaining their environments. They are vital to the marine ecosystem and are the largest source of oxygen. My collection draws parallels between the roles of planktons and mothers, using bold cow leather to represent the strength and resilience of mothers, and delicate silk organza to capture the intricate beauty and essential role of planktons. My Collective collection showcases Leather as A Symbol of Robustness and Timelessness. I chose leather because of its robustness and durability that mirrors the enduring strength of mothers. Leather, is a material that not only withstands the test of time but also gains character and beauty with age. This timeless quality of leather aligns with the perpetual nature of a mother’s love and dedication. Leather’s natural resilience and ability to be passed down through generations make it an ideal metaphor for the lasting impact and legacy of motherhood. "I AM A PLANKTON" beautifies the struggles of mothers and women through a sculptural, handcrafted collection that can be worn or stored for exhibition purposes. Through my collection I seek to empower women to pursue their dreams without fear. As a mother of five, I continued my studies and achieved more. I want to encourage women, especially those with existing responsibilities, to chase their dreams. You are the author of your life; the power to shape it is in your hands. You are strong, beautiful, and capable. UK Design Competition 2024
